It was such a relief to have someone so knowledgeable and kind help us through this. Tewksbury Notary is a gem for families who need reliable mobile service.”
Service: Mobile notarization of a healthcare proxy and durable power of attorney
Location: Client’s home in Dracut, Massachusetts
Documents notarized: 2 (Massachusetts Health Care Proxy form, Durable Power of Attorney)
Travel time from Tewksbury office: 10 minutes via Route 38 / 113
Outcome: Both documents executed bedside, witnessed and notarized in under 30 minutes

The Family’s Situation

Emily reached out on a Tuesday afternoon. Her mother had been recovering from a recent procedure and could not travel to a notary office. The family needed two documents executed quickly. A Massachusetts Health Care Proxy form would let Emily make medical decisions on her mother’s behalf if her mother could not communicate. A durable power of attorney would let Emily handle banking and bill payment during the recovery.

The original plan was to drive Mom to a bank for free notary service. That fell apart when standing for more than ten minutes became painful. The family called three notaries in the Dracut area. Two did not return the call. One quoted a fee that did not include the bedside visit. Emily found Tewksbury Notary through a Google search for “mobile notary Dracut MA” and called the same afternoon.

Why Mobile Notarization Matters in Healthcare Situations

Healthcare proxies and powers of attorney are the two documents families request most when a loved one’s health changes. Both must be signed in the principal’s presence. Both require a notary’s seal in Massachusetts. Many seniors cannot travel to an office, especially after surgery or during a flare-up of chronic conditions. Mobile notary service brings the notary to the home, the hospital or the rehab facility.

Massachusetts law requires the principal to sign in front of the notary. The notary verifies identification, confirms the principal understands the document and witnesses the signature. For a Health Care Proxy, two adult witnesses also sign. We bring our own witnesses when families need them.

What We Brought to the Dracut Visit

  • Notary commission seal and journal
  • Two witnesses (Hanson and a second adult)
  • Two blank Massachusetts Health Care Proxy forms (in case of mistake)
  • Photo ID verification process for the principal
  • Quiet, patient pace adapted to the principal’s energy

Step by Step at the Bedside

The visit lasted twenty-eight minutes. Here is what happened.

Minutes 1 to 5. Hanson arrived at the home in Dracut, introduced himself to Emily and her mother and reviewed the documents. He confirmed the principal could see, hear and respond. He asked her to state her name, the date and what document she was signing. This is the legal capacity check Massachusetts notaries are trained to perform.

Minutes 6 to 12. Photo ID review. The principal showed her current Massachusetts driver’s license. Hanson logged the ID details in his notary journal. He explained each section of the Health Care Proxy in plain language: who the agent is, what powers the agent has, when the proxy takes effect, how to revoke it.

Minutes 13 to 22. The signing. The principal signed first. Two adult witnesses signed next. Hanson signed and applied his notary seal. He repeated the process for the durable power of attorney, which requires only the notary signature and seal. Emily kept the original documents. We retain a record in the journal as Massachusetts law requires.

Minutes 23 to 28. Wrap-up. Hanson explained how Emily’s mother could revoke the proxy if she changed her mind. He reminded the family to provide copies to the primary care physician, any specialists and the local hospital admissions office. Emily kept the appointment from extending into the dinner hour, which was important for her mother’s routine.
